The only way on and off Gibraltar (except by air or sea) involves crossing the airport runway, which lies between the rock and the Spanish mainland. When planes are about to take off or land, bells ring and barricades come down, much like a railroad crossing in most other places. Then, after the plane passes, you can walk or drive across to the other side.
